A documentary about the downfall of a river
The Story of Adyar addresses the environmental issues faced by the Adyar River, tracing their causes from the river’s source to its mouth on the Bay of Bengal. The illegal sand mining and the uncontrolled growth of the industry, in addition to the enormous growth of the Chennai metropolis are not only destroying the river, but are also directly threatening the livelihoods of the people who are directly dependent on the river as fishermen or residents.
The documentary also offers insights into the river restoration support at Adyar Poonga and contrasts it with footage from the 2015 flood disaster in Chennai. The flood submerged large parts of the city and brought life to a complete standstill.
The documentation project was realized in cooperation with the Goethe-Max Mueller Bhavan Institute in Chennai.

Eine Dokumentation über den Verfall eines Flusses
“The Story of Adyar” befasst sich mit den Umweltproblemen, mit denen der Fluss Adyar konfrontiert ist und verfolgt ihre Ursachen und Hintergründe von der Quelle des Flusses bis zu seiner Mündung am Golf von Bengalen. Der illegale Sandabbau und das unkontrollierte Wuchern der Industrie sind neben dem enormen Wachstum der Metropole Chennai zerstören nicht nur den Fluss, sondern auch die Lebensgrundlagen der Menschen, die als Fischer oder Anwohner direkt vom Fluss abhängig sind.
Der Dokumentarfilm bietet darüber hinaus Einblicke in die Bemühungen zur Wiederherstellung des Flusses am Adyar Poonga und kontrasitiert sie mit Aufnahmen von der Flutkatastrophe 2015 in Chennai. Die Flut setzte große Teile der Stadt unter Wasser und brachte das Leben vollständig zum Erliegen.
Das Dokumentationsprojekt wurde in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Goethe-Max Mueller Bhavan Institut in Chennai realisiert.
